In a significant step aimed at addressing housing insecurity among low-income families, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a comprehensive housing initiative titled “Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar” (Own Land, Own Home). As part of this initiative, an eight-member committee has been established to ensure the fair and transparent distribution of free residential plots across the province.

The Punjab government has set bold targets for this housing scheme. The immediate objective is to complete the construction of 20,000 homes by February 2025. Beyond that, the government aims to construct 100,000 homes annually, establishing a sustainable long-term strategy to combat homelessness and housing shortages in the region.
So far, the government has successfully developed 35 housing schemes covering 2,807 plots across 22 districts of Punjab. Additionally, work is in progress on nine more schemes that will provide an extra 1,119 plots in seven districts. Financial Support Through Interest-Free Loans

Additionally, over 2,000 beneficiaries have received a second installment of their loans, signaling the program’s effectiveness and continuation.
Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

- Must be a permanent resident of Punjab.
- Must apply for a plot in their home district.
- Should not own any property in Pakistan, including property held by a spouse or dependent.
- Must be registered with the National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER) with a Poverty Means Test (PMT) score of 60 or lower.
- Household income should not exceed Rs. 50,000 per month.
- Must be at least 18 years old, with priority given to married applicants.
- Should not have a criminal record or any history of loan defaults.
- Must be the head of a nuclear family.
Application Process
Eligible citizens can apply for the scheme through two main channels:
- Online: Applications can be submitted through the official portal at azag.punjab.gov.pk, where detailed instructions and requirements are listed.
- In-Person: For those without internet access or needing assistance, local deputy commissioners’ offices are available to help with form submission and documentation.
To further facilitate citizens, a helpline (0800-09100) and complaint portal (complaints.punjab.gov.pk) have also been established.
Public Response and Demand
The scheme has generated a highly positive response from the public. Over 400,000 completed applications have been submitted to date, with an additional 74,000 in draft status. The official website has seen more than 728,000 visits, which demonstrates the widespread interest and trust in the program.
